Taiwan Steel entered the 2020 Taiwan Premier League as one of the most discussed teams in the competition, but their early performances showed that assembling a strong squad did not automatically produce a finished team.
The Tainan club had recruited aggressively before the season. Several established domestic players joined the squad, and the quality of those additions led many observers to view Taiwan Steel as a potential title challenger.
Big Expectations After Major Recruitment
One of the most notable additions was Marc Fenelus, who arrived after a highly productive period with Tatung. Taiwan Steel also strengthened other areas of the squad and entered the campaign with considerably more experience than before.
On paper, the team appeared capable of competing with Tatung, Taipower and the other leading clubs.
The challenge was turning those individual additions into a coordinated team capable of delivering consistent performances.
A Team Still Learning to Play Together
New players require time to understand one another's movement, positioning and decision-making. That process can be especially noticeable in defensive situations, where small mistakes in coordination can quickly lead to chances for the opposition.
Taiwan Steel's early matches suggested that the team was still developing those relationships.
Their attacking quality was clear, but maintaining balance between attack and defence remained an important part of their development.
The Pressure of Being a Title Contender
Expectations themselves created another challenge. Taiwan Steel were no longer viewed simply as a developing club. Their recruitment meant that opponents and supporters expected results immediately.
That placed greater pressure on every early performance, particularly when compared with more established contenders such as Taipower and defending champions Tatung.
Plenty of Time to Improve
Despite the questions surrounding their early form, there was little reason to dismiss Taiwan Steel's prospects.
The season was still in its early stages, and the squad possessed enough quality to improve significantly as players became more familiar with one another.
If the team could develop greater consistency while preserving its attacking strength, Taiwan Steel remained capable of becoming an important factor in the championship race.
