The early weeks of the 2020 Taiwan Premier League continued to produce competitive matches as the main title contenders began to establish their positions.
After an eventful opening round, attention turned to whether defending champions Tatung could recover their momentum and whether Taipower, Taiwan Steel and Taichung Futuro could maintain their strong starts.
The Title Race Begins to Take Shape
Taipower had entered the campaign with renewed confidence after defeating Tatung in the opening derby. Their settled squad and experience made them one of the strongest early candidates for the championship.
Tatung, meanwhile, were still adjusting to changes in personnel. The champions remained dangerous, but their early performances suggested the 2020 season might be less comfortable than their previous title-winning campaigns.
Taiwan Steel Under the Spotlight
Taiwan Steel attracted considerable attention after strengthening heavily before the season. Their attacking options and new signings gave the club the potential to challenge at the top of the standings.
However, building a successful team from a newly strengthened squad required time, and the early rounds provided an important test of how quickly the players could adapt to one another.
Taichung Futuro Continue to Develop
Taichung Futuro remained another club worth watching. Their squad had improved and they were increasingly capable of competing with the traditional leaders of Taiwanese football.
Strong results during the early part of the campaign would strengthen the belief that Futuro could remain involved in the upper part of the table throughout the season.
Competition at Both Ends of the Table
The newly introduced promotion and relegation system also changed the importance of results near the bottom of the league.
Clubs that struggled in the opening weeks could no longer treat a low finish as a minor setback. The new structure meant there was now a genuine sporting consequence for teams ending the campaign in the relegation positions.
That change added another layer of interest to a season already made unusual by the conditions surrounding the COVID-19 period.
